This is the best red palm oil I have ever tested. It comes from an eco-friendly company in Malaysia harvested from established plantations that are RSPO certified (no destruction of rainforests and strict environmental standards are maintained). Red palm oil has been considered a “sacred food” for over 4,000 years by coastal peoples in Africa, Central and South America, and Asia.
Most palm oils in the US have been refined, hydrogenated, bleached, and deodorized, resulting in a significant loss of vital nutrients and the toxic presence of oxidized trans-fats. In contrast, the red palms that make up this product are grown on an isolated island off the coast of Malaysia. When the palm fruits are picked they are rushed by boat to a special mill where they are pressed, minimally processed, and then allowed to cool to room temperature.
This yields a rich reddish-orange oil packed with alpha-, beta-, and gamma-carotenoids (vitamin A), tocopherols and tocotrienols (vitamin E), sterols (beta-sitosterol has been used in the treatment of cancer, enlarged prostates, and menopausal symptoms), as well as powerful water-soluble antioxidants and flavonoids. Palm oil contains a healthy balance of about 50% naturally occurring saturated fats and 50% unsaturated fats, and is also abundant in oleic acid-the main fatty acid found in olive oil.
Red palm oil has been shown to help protect against heart disease, blood sugar dysregulation, visual problems (macular degeneration and cataracts), hypertension, memory loss, and cancer. Although it can be taken orally, it is most widely used in cooking as it remains stable under higher temperatures.
